What is the Function of Cartilage in the Body and What Happens When it Breaks Down?

When cartilage breaks down or is damaged, your joints begin to slow down, friction increases and pain develops. Cartilage may break off, bone spurs may develop and the joint may become inflamed. This is very painful and can result in markedly decreased flexibility. In several different clinical studies, glucosamine has been shown to helps to repair damaged cartilage and increase flexibility. Good joint supplement will act as  as a preventative measure to help stave off future problems.

Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin

Both of them work together as  a powerful joint pain remedy. They prevent the progression of the disease, reduce inflammation, and relieve mild to severe pain. Of all the joint pain supplements on the market, glucosamine and chondroitin have the largest body of evidence behind them.

The Glucosamine is technically a form of an amino sugar that plays a major role in cartilage formation. Glucosamine stimulates the production of water-binding glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, two essential building blocks of cartilage and also inhibits the production of chondrocytes, enzymes that break down cartilage. Glucosamine also appears to suppress the destructive enzymes collagenase and phospholipase. In effect, supplementing with glucosamine is akin to giving your body the raw materials it needs to promote healthy cartilage – but naturally. Glucosamine helps to form tendons, ligaments, cartilage and nails. Glucosamine has so few side effects primarily because it is already a natural component of the body. The only problem with glucosamine is that its natural production in the body seems to fade with time, injury and aging. Supplementing with glucosamine can help replace the deficit and restore the proper glucosamine balance. Fortunately with the modern miracles of technology and science, supplemental liquid glucosamine has been shown to help possibly slow the process of joint deterioration all while relieving your discomfort.

Chondroitin Sulfate is a component of cartilage. In molecular terms, it is a gigantic molecule, mainly composed of repeated chains of glucosamine sulfate. Because of this, it functions in a way that is similar to glucosamine. Many of the clinical studies with chondroitin utilized injected forms of chondroitin, something we imagine you would prefer to avoid on a daily basis.

Most of the research on glucosamine and chondroitin has focused on their ability to halt the progression of osteoarthritis. For example, in a double-blind,es placebo-controlled study in Lancet, 212 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee randomly took 1,500 mg of glucosamine or a placebo daily for three years (they did not take chondroitin). At the end of the study, the placebo group showed a significant loss of cartilage, but the glucosamine patients did not. Studies also show that glucosamine and chondroitin reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

You can buy these supplements separately, but Theodosakis recommends combining them because their benefits increase when they’re taken together (studies confirm this effect).

Why liquid glucosamine over tablets or pills?

Two words-Absorption and Bioavailability. Unlike pills that contain binders, fillers and chelating agents. Sure, you can buy the cheap “no name” Glucosamine Sulfate Salts that contain nothing else but they will probably do little to nothing for you . The choice is up to you. Plus, you do not have to take 4, 5 or 6 pills a day. You can simply drink your daily serving in the mornings, evenings or even with lunch. You don’t even need to space your doses out like some of the pills. One daily serving is just as effective.

MSM

MSM, also known as methylsulfonylmethane, is a major supplier of sulfur, the fourth most abundant mineral in the body. In animal studies, joints affected by pain have lower sulfur content. Mice with joint pain, when given MSM, experience less joint deterioration. The results of a preliminary double-blind trial stated that patients with joint pain found that MSM reduced discomfort after six weeks. MSM is generally regarded as an additional “helper” against joint discomfort, but is best combined with other more powerful ingredients such as Glucosamine.

Turmeric

Most people know turmeric as a culinary herb (it’s the spice in curry powder that makes it yellow), but it also possesses potent medicinal properties. A member of the ginger family, turmeric (Curcuma longa) treats mild osteoarthritis pain and inflammation. Only animal studies have proven its ability to reduce joint inflammation, but the herb has a centuries-long history of being used for inflammation in Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India. Several of our experts agreed that turmeric can effectively relieve joint pain.

Doctors and researchers are unsure exactly how turmeric works, although it appears to inhibit the production of inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins and leukotrienes, Hobbs says. A 1997 study in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry showed that turmeric along with capsaicin (from red pepper) lowered inflammation in rats’ paws. Other studies have been done on inflammation not related to joints; one of the studies involved rats, and another involved surgery patients with post-operative inflammation. Both the studies showed that turmeric reduced inflammation as powerfully as the drug phenylbutazone.
